Sunday was opening day for the newly added Cubs, and they played a new look Mudcats team. This game was closer than the score showed. 0-0 after two with only a hit to be had for either squad, a double off the wall by Raff that saw him try to stretch it out to a triple only to see him gunned down at third. Then, in the bottom of three, Chris Smith hit a walk off double in the alley to score the 5th run of the inning to cap off a 6 hit Mudcat inning. Harold Hopink was big at the plate going 2-2 with 1 run and 2 stolen bases, and made a diving effort in cf that popped out of his glove when he hit the ground hard. Todd Campbell pitched well for the Cubs but had no offence to back him on this day. All three that took the hill for the Mudcats pitched well in the shutout as Chad Costello picked up the W for his efforts. The cubs looked good, a few more outings together and the Cubs will see some W's soon on the board.
